What is a migration ?

An Odoo migration consists of transferring your database, developments, and configurations to a newer version of the software. This process goes beyond a simple technical update : it’s a strategic step that allows your company to benefit from Odoo’s latest innovations, improve system performance, and strengthen data security.

Each new version of Odoo comes with a range of improvements: new features, enhanced automation, better usability, and increased compatibility with existing modules. Conversely, staying on an outdated version exposes your company to risks such as slower performance, incompatibilities, and loss of official support.

Migration to Odoo or upgrade: what’s the difference?

We often talk about "migration" for two very different projects. Switching from another ERP to Odoo has nothing to do with upgrading from one version of Odoo to a newer version. At Nalios, we support both, but their scope, duration, and stakes are not the same.

Migration to Odoo
Complete ERP change
Recovery and cleaning of historical data
Redesign of existing business processes
Comprehensive training of teams on a new tool
Structuring project, end-to-end strategic support
OR
Odoo upgrade
Switching to a newer version of Odoo
Preservation of existing data and configuration
Adaptation of existing modules and customizations
Targeted training on the new features of the version
Faster project, with a technical focus

What does a migration involve

Migrating to a new version requires thorough preparation. It involves analyzing the current version and existing custom developments, adapting modules and business workflows, as well as testing and validating the system in a pre-production environment before the final go-live.

It’s both a technical and strategic operation that demands solid expertise to avoid any data loss and to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

If you are using an older version of Odoo,
upgrade to Odoo 19 is inevitable.

But too often, historical partners make this transition complex and costly

Customisation too onerous to maintain ?

Customisations that are too cumbersome to maintain... Each update breaks functions. You waste time, money and mobilise your developers just to get the system up and running.

Too dependent on external service providers ?

Your ERP is outdated, with no clear vision for the future. Your team lacks autonomy and depends on external developers for day-to-day operations.

Not using Odoo to its full potential ?

You're only using some of the features available. Your current configuration is holding you back.

Still having to use Excel to get ahead ?

Your team can't rely on Odoo 100% of the time. They're juggling Excel spreadsheets instead of taking advantage of automation.

FAQ Odoo migration

An update applies minor fixes or improvements within the same major version (e.g., 17.0.1 → 17.0.2). A migration transfers your database, configurations, and custom developments to a higher major version (e.g., Odoo 16 → Odoo 19). It's a technical and strategic operation that requires careful planning and expert guidance.

Yes, it is technically possible to migrate from any version, including older ones like v12 or v13, directly to Odoo 19. However, the larger the version gap, the more complex the migration. Nalios analyses your specific situation to determine the best strategy: direct migration or a phased approach.

We still recommend upgrading every two versions to get the most out of the improvements in each new version of Odoo.

No, as long as the migration is properly prepared. At Nalios, we always run a full migration in a pre-production environment before going live. Every piece of data is verified, and the production migration only happens once you have validated the result. Zero data loss, zero surprises.

This is often the most delicate point. Each specific development must be analyzed, retested, and adapted to the new version. It is also an opportunity to clean up your code: at Nalios, we reduce the number of specific developments by an average of 50%, replacing custom code with standard Odoo features that have evolved between two versions.

The duration depends on the complexity of your instance: number of modules used, volume of data, amount of specific developments. Generally, a simple migration (few customizations) takes 4 to 8 weeks. A complex migration can take 3 to 6 months. Nalios conducts a preliminary audit to provide you with an accurate estimate.

No. The migration takes place in parallel with your existing system. Your current Odoo instance remains fully operational until the go-live day. The final switch is planned for a minimal time slot (often a weekend) to avoid impacting your operations.

Technically, you can stay on an older version. But each Odoo version has a limited support lifecycle: once a version is deprecated, you no longer receive security patches or updates. Staying on an obsolete version exposes your business to growing technical and security risks. Migration is not optional : it is inevitable.

Nalios is certified across all Odoo versions from v8 to v19. Our approach stands out through a deliberate reduction of custom developments: we don't migrate unnecessary code : we simplify your system. The result: lower maintenance costs, greater team autonomy, and an Odoo that's ready for the years ahead.
